The view back to Nelson's Dockyard from the beginning of the trail up to Fort Berkeley.

The view across the harbor toward the ridge leading to Shirley Heights. The pictures on the next page were taken from the road along that ridge.

The path was a little steep in places.

The local wildlife. These are sheep, not goats. Due to the tropical climate, they don't grow the coats we associate with sheep from the US and the British Isles.

Our goal, Fort Berkeley, completed in 1744. This overlook guarded the entrance to the harbor. During sieges a chain and timber boom was drawn acrosss the entrance of the harbor from the fort to a battery on the other side.

Here's Denise, and the view out to sea from the fort.

This is Hayden and Barbara whom we met on the trail (I asked her about her digital camera!). We liked them a lot and ran into them several times again during the visit. They are from Washington state, and seem to travel a lot. We hope they come to visit us in Cambridge on their next trip to New England. Barbara used to raise goats (or was it sheep?) and told us that you can tell the goats from sheep by their tails. Sheep tails point down while goat tails point up.
